The spirit spent its initial fourteen years resting patiently in American white oak ex-bourbon barrels, establishing a smooth, honeyed foundation. It was then transferred for an additional four years of intensive finishing into exceptionally rare, hand-selected Matusalem Oloroso Sherry butts sourced directly from the renowned Gonzalez Byass bodega in Spain. Bottled at an ideal and expressive 43% ABV, this iconic Highland dram delivers the legendary, robust, and deeply sherried profile that collectors and luxury enthusiasts demand from each distinct year’s harvest.
The nose is exceptionally rich, regal, and aromatic, opening with dominant waves of vanilla bean and dark chocolate, which slowly expand to reveal complex layers of caramelized orange peel, rich English toffee, and a sophisticated touch of old leather. On the palate, the 43% ABV provides a remarkably full-bodied, velvet-like, and oily texture that coats the mouth completely. Decadent flavours of sweet marzipan, black licorice, and espresso take center stage, seamlessly intertwined with notes of rich fruitcake, dark molasses, and a heavy glaze of honeyed citrus. The finish is incredibly long, warm, and structured, leaving a persistent trail of rich molasses cake, warming winter spices, and a final, elegant wave of dark roasted cacao and refined European oak tannins.
The creation and annual orchestration of this premium 2024 expression were led by Master Whisky Maker Gregg Glass, alongside the enduring legacy of Master Blender Richard Paterson. The production team’s unparalleled relationship with Gonzalez Byass grants them exclusive access to seasoned Matusalem sherry casks, which have held rich, sweet fortified wine for at least thirty years. This elite wood selection is crucial, as the team meticulously monitored the final four years of finishing for the 2024 batch to ensure the intense, nutty dark fruit characteristics of the ancient sherry wood perfectly married with the heavy, complex character of the mature base spirit without ever overwhelming it.
