The Whisky

Glenmorangie Tùsail is a fascinating departure from the distillery’s typical focus on wood finishing, shifting the spotlight instead to the foundational “soul” of the spirit: the grain. As the sixth release in the acclaimed Private Edition series, Tùsail (Scots Gaelic for “originary”) was born from Dr. Bill Lumsden’s desire to explore the influence of heritage barley. This expression is crafted entirely from Maris Otter, a legendary winter barley variety first harvested in 1965, prized by traditional brewers for its deep, bready flavour but largely abandoned by the industry due to its low yield.

In a rare move for a modern giant, Glenmorangie arranged for this precious parcel of Maris Otter to be traditionally floor-malted by hand. Bottled at 46% ABV and non-chill filtered, the spirit was matured in a combination of first-fill and refill ex-Bourbon casks. This ensures the cask influence provides a sturdy frame without overshadowing the “rustic” and robust malty profile of the heritage grain. It is a bold, textured Highland malt that offers a savory complexity rarely seen in Glenmorangie’s more delicate core range.

Our Tasting Notes

Nose: Rich and profoundly malty—reminiscent of opening a fresh tin of digestive biscuits and malted milks. Beneath the grain heavy front, there are delicate layers of poached pears, orange zest, and vanilla cream, accompanied by an earthy hint of spring moss and nutty toffee.

Palate: Voluminous and velvety. The palate leads with a “bakery case” sweetness: honeyed oatcakes, gingerbread, and thick molasses. Mid-palate, a warming tingle of ginger root and cinnamon develops, mingling with savoury notes of hazelnuts and dark cocoa. It feels significantly “weightier” on the tongue than the standard Glenmorangie 10.

Finish: Long and incredibly savoury. The sweetness of the barley persists, evolving into lingering notes of nutmeg, toasted oats, and a touch of bitter marmalade, finally settling into a soft, malty caress.

The Distillery

Glenmorangie is home to the tallest stills in Scotland—standing at over five meters, the same height as an adult giraffe. These towering copper necks ensure that only the lightest and purest vapours reach the top, usually resulting in a floral and elegant spirit. However, the Tùsail project proved that by altering the barley variety and malting technique, the distillery could produce a “burly” and rustic spirit even through their famously graceful stills. Located in Tain on the shores of the Dornoch Firth, Glenmorangie has been a pioneer in “unnecessarily well made” whisky since 1843, constantly balancing their Highland heritage with scientific innovation.
