Glenmorangie A Tale of Spices shifts the focus entirely to radical wood experimentation, standing as the sixth limited-edition installment in the distillery’s highly acclaimed “A Tale of…” portfolio. The conceptual architecture of this Non-Age Statement single malt was born from Director of Whisky Creation Dr Bill Lumsden’s sensory memories of vibrant global spice markets. The structural blueprint relies on an incredibly complex four-cask finishing configuration applied to the distillery’s classic bourbon-matured Highland spirit. For the first time in Glenmorangie’s history, the liquid is finished in French oak Moroccan red wine casks, layered alongside new charred American oak barrels, rich Pedro Ximénez sherry butts, and shaved, toasted, and re-charred (STR) red wine casks. Bottled at a non-chill-filtered strength of 46% ABV, this mosaic of wood seasoning introduces an intense, exotic kitchen of baking spices and florals without losing the bright citrus heart of the new-make spirit.
On the eye, the liquid presents a brilliant clear amber with warm coppery-orange undertones, showing great viscosity in the glass with uniform, slow-dripping legs that leave clean tracks down the walls. The nose opens with a highly fragrant, wonderfully perfumed bouquet that bursts with rich floral top notes of rose petals, jasmine blossoms, carnations, and lilac. As the spirit breathes, an exotic market of aromatic dry spices uncurls, revealing ground cumin, precious saffron, cracked nutmeg, ginger, and a touch of anise, all underpinned by sugar-coated almonds and a distinct lift of fresh eucalyptus leaf. On the palate, the 46% bottling strength delivers a remarkably bold, vibrant, and texturally oily mouthfeel that completely commands the tongue. Sizzling upfront flavours of warm ginger, black pepper, and mustard seed spark an explosive entry, before transitioning into a sweeter mid-palate showing rich demerara sugar, creamy mint toffee, and toasted chestnuts. The finish is of grand length, exceptionally clean, and satisfyingly drying, leaving behind a persistent trail of aromatic clove, dark leather, charred oak staves, and a final, mouth watering hint of fresh mint.
The wood orchestration, precise vatting ratios, and long-term cask tracking for this limited edition were directed by the elite production panel at Tain, operating under the joint leadership of Dr Bill Lumsden and Master Blender Gillian Macdonald. Managing a four-way finish that utilises completely untried timber like Moroccan red wine casks requires immense structural precision. Because raw, new charred oak and high-ester wine staves can rapidly inject bitter wood tannins or aggressive, drying cloves, the team had to systematically sample the warehouse rows to catch the exact month of optimal wood integration, ensuring the exotic spices framed the spirit rather than smothered it.
The Whisky Company Rating: 8.6/10
This highly complex, multi-cask experimental Highland single malt has sparked vibrant debate across major international critical circles, celebrated as a triumph of wood management:
Whisky Magazines and Independent Blogs: Tasting panels award the expression a stable 86 out of 100 benchmark aggregate. Drinkers routinely praise the inclusion of the rare Moroccan wine wood, noting that the sizzling chilli and cardamon action on the mid-palate provides a brilliantly wacky, highly memorable drinking experience.
Reddit Whisky Community: Registered a matching 86 out of 100 score, highlighting the dram’s exceptional textural weight. Critics pointed out that while the intense spice notes might catch classic bourbon cask fans off guard, the underlying doughy nougat, malty almond milk, and rich saffron components showcase massive blending ambition.
The Verdict: While absolute malt traditionalists who look for clean, unadulterated orchard fruits or those who demand heavy Islay maritime peat smoke might find the intense flurry of cumin, clove, and eucalyptus a bit loud on the entry, the universal consensus is that A Tale of Spices is a beautifully bold, brilliantly executed luxury that rewards patient exploration.
