Glenmorangie Signet is widely regarded as one of the most innovative and indulgent creations in the world of single malt. It is the first Scotch whisky to be made using a significant portion of high roasted “chocolate” malted barley, which is typically reserved for crafting the finest dark stouts. This unique mash bill is combined with Glenmorangie’s estate grown Cadboll barley and married with some of the distillery’s oldest and rarest stocks—some aged up to 40 years. Bottled at 46.0% ABV and non-chill filtered, Signet is a non-age statement masterpiece that focuses entirely on depth, texture, and an velvet-like intensity.
The nose is powerful and captivating, offering an immediate burst of Aruba espresso, sizzling spices, and dark chocolate, followed by notes of sherry soaked raisins and orange peel. On the palate, the experience is incredibly rich and coating, delivering layers of bitter mocha, toasted cinnamon, and sizzling ginger, balanced by a surprising sweetness of butterscotch and vanilla. The texture is famously heavy and luxurious. The finish is remarkably long and drying, concluding with a sophisticated interplay of springy mint, bright citrus, and a final, lingering cocoa bitterness.
This expression is the magnum opus of Dr. Bill Lumsden, Glenmorangie’s Director of Whisky Creation. Driven by his personal obsession with the aroma of freshly roasted coffee, Dr. Bill spent years perfecting the high-roast malting process to ensure it could be distilled into a workable spirit. His vision was to create a whisky that defied traditional age statements in favour of a specific sensory profile. By marrying this “chocolate” spirit with ancient stocks and maturing them in bespoke Designer Casks made of slow-growth American oak, he has produced a dram that is truly incomparable.
Glenmorangie Distillery, located in Tain in the Northern Highlands, is home to the tallest copper pot stills in Scotland. Standing at the same height as a fully grown giraffe, these exceptionally tall stills ensure that only the lightest and purest vapours reach the top, resulting in a floral and elegant spirit. This “clean” base spirit provides the perfect canvas for the heavy, roasted character of the Signet, allowing the distillery to produce a whisky that is both incredibly bold and remarkably refined.
